Discarded Cigarette Leads to Rape Suspect's Arrest

A discarded cigarette butt sealed the case for police in Pittsburgh this month. Akaninyene Akan, 29, was arrested in California for raping a Pittsburgh woman. He was being held in a California jail until the DNA results were back from the cigarette butt found at the scene of the crime.

Akan has been charged with entering the young woman's window of her apartment near the University of Pittsburgh campus on September 12. Police had to wait for evidence to arise connecting him to the rape. They got lucky when, five days later, they stopped him for questioning without charging him. At that time he asked one of the officers for a cigarette; when he discarded the butt, police took it in as evidence and ran a DNA test on it.
