160 Motorists Arrested in San Diego Over Super Bowl Weekend
The Super Bowl weekend brought in 160 jailed motorists by police in San Diego. This represents an 18.5 percent increase over the same two-day period a year before.
During the weekend of 2010's Super Bowl Sunday police arrested 135 motorists on DUI charges while one person died in an accident with a suspected drunken driver. Luckily there were no fatalities this year but four people were arrested due to injury accidents that stemmed from drunken driving.
This all came as a result of the county's Avoid the14 DUI Task Force that was in full effect for the big football weekend. There was a checkpoint on Olivehain Road in Encinitas on Saturday night as well as increased patrols in more than 20 communities on the day of the Super Bowl. Authorities had hoped to reduce the number of drunk drivers on the road by airing a national campaign called "Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk" sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and additional agencies.
