San Diego Task Force Audits Thousands of Sex Offenders
The San Diego County Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force was able to audit 2,062 offenders in 2010, up from 960 in 2009. That accounts for almost half of the county's 4,400 sex offenders who are required by law to register their addresses with local police.
The task force was able to work with police officers in nine cities, in addition to the Sheriff's Department, to ensure that offenders were living at the right address and following the requirements of their registration. Each address is then listed on the Megan's Law website for public use and notification.
Probation and parole officers also check in with sex offenders to make sure that they are not violating the terms of their release. Although these conditions are different for each offender they can include living with children, possessing pornography and drinking alcohol.
