Drug Trafficker Facing Murder Sentence
After intentionally striking a Border Patrol agent with his truck, a Mexican drug trafficker now faces a life sentence for
murder.
After hearing the testimony against Jesus Navarro Montes, 25, U.S. District Judge Michael M. Anello sentenced him to life behind bars for the murder of Luis Aguilar. The jury heard testimony that Montes was attempting to flee across the border to Mexico when Agent Aguilar attempted to stop him. Montes swerved to avoid the spike strip that Aguilar and another agent set up to stop the Hummer, and in the process struck Aguilar. He later died as a result of injuries caused by Montes.
Although the incident happened on January 19, 2008, Aguilar did not stand trial until this year. He was just captured in Mexico last year and extradited to the United States to await his trial for murder.
