Police Officer Victim of Auto Theft
A 30-year-old man was arrested when he allegedly stole a senior volunteer sheriff's department unattended vehicle and then led the department on a 23-mile car chase. The vehicle was being used by a senior volunteer sheriff who was conducting traffic outside of the vehicle for a local bike race. The 30-year-old man apparently got into the car, refused to listen to the volunteer sheriff's demands to give up the vehicle, and then fled the scene.
The Sheriff's Department pursued the man for nearly 40 min and over 20 miles throughout the surrounding area. The suspect was eventually cornered in a cul-de-sac in a local neighborhood. The man tried to drive through a residential fence in order to escape, but then surrendered himself to the authorities.
The Sheriff's Department has confirmed that there were no weapons in the vehicle that the man stole. They have also commented that there currently appears to be no real motive for the crime. The suspect has been charged by officers with evading arrest and vehicle theft, among other minor offenses.
