Officers Put an End to Car Smuggling Operation
Law enforcement agents from across the country worked together to arrest four men believed to be part of a car smuggling operation.
The four men, who were in El Cajon, California at the time of arrest, are believed to be working with several others in the Detroit area to smuggle rental cars out of the country to Iraq. They worked together to steal a variety of vehicles, including luxury cars, drove the cars to Canada, flew them to Turkey and then over to Iraq. After investigating the actions of these men and more over the past two years, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) obtained enough evidence to serve arrest warrants to the men.
Nine more men were arrested later that week in Detroit on the same charges. According to reports, the head of the theft crimes is a 67-year-old man who was using his company as a front to move the vehicles. This is the second time in the past month that crimes connecting El Cajon and Detroit have been brought to national attention.
