Police in San Diego, California were working overtime during the holidays to keep the roads safe from drunk drivers. Their annual crackdown netted more DUI arrests than the previous year.
Each year officers in this area increase DUI patrols as part of an annual campaign. From the middle of the month until after New Year's Eve, police officers are on the lookout for impaired drivers. This is done by increased patrols on the road as well as DUI and license checkpoints.
This year saw a drastic increase in DUI arrests when compared to last year. There were 534 individuals arrested for driving under the influence over the holidays this year; last year saw 444 people being detained for similar crimes. There were two drunk driving-caused deaths this year in the county.
